Background Okita Soji, (1842 or 1844 ・July 19, 1868) was the captain of the first unit of the Shinsengumi, a special police force in Kyoto during the late shogunate period. He was one of the best swordsmen of the Shinsengumi, along with Saito Hajime and Nagakura Shinpachi. He was one of the key figures of the Shinsengumi, and also one of the founding members along with Commander Kondo Isami. Okita was very young when he adopted the title of assistant vice commander and showed exceptional skill for someone his age. During his time with the Shinsengumi, he also became a kenjutsu instructor for the faction. Even becoming the fifth master of the Shinsengumi痴 trademark fighting style, Tennen Rishin-ryu. |
